If a lookup on this website fails
Every lookup is made by your browser, so a failure is usually local rather than a Tanaw outage. The common causes are a network that blocks DNS-over-HTTPS - many corporate, school and captive portal networks do - a browser extension that blocks the request, or a provider that is rate limiting or temporarily down. Tanaw names the provider and the failure in the affected panel rather than showing a generic error.
Known limitations
A web page cannot read another website's page content, so the lookup on this website covers DNS, registration, network and certificate records only. Page-level technology, security headers, SEO, performance, accessibility and privacy analysis run in the extension, which reads the page locally in your browser.
Certificate information comes from public Certificate Transparency logs and reflects what was issued for a domain, not the certificate a server is currently presenting. Infrastructure behind a CDN or proxy is not identifiable from public records, and Tanaw says so rather than naming the proxy as the host. Browser-restricted pages, Chrome Web Store pages and internal browser pages are not inspectable by the extension.
Security scope
Tanaw provides diagnostic information and does not replace a penetration test, continuous security monitoring, or professional legal and compliance review. It does not perform active scanning of any kind.
